Whitening or veneers: what works for deep stains?
Not all tooth discoloration is the same. Stains that live on the enamel surface usually respond well to professional whitening. Discoloration that comes from inside the tooth may not, and that is where veneers earn their place. Figuring out which kind you have is the first step, and it changes the answer completely.
Stains that whitening handles well
Extrinsic stains sit on or just within the enamel surface. Coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco are the classic causes, and general yellowing with age behaves similarly. Professional whitening lightens these predictably, and results are often visible quickly.
Stains that whitening cannot fix
Intrinsic discoloration comes from inside the tooth: certain medications during tooth development, trauma that darkened a single tooth, or deep gray tones rather than yellow ones. Whitening gel works on enamel, so these deeper causes often respond partially or not at all. Whitening also does not change the color of existing fillings or crowns.
Where veneers come in
A veneer covers the front of the tooth with porcelain in the shade you choose, which makes it the reliable answer when the discoloration is internal, when one tooth stands out from its neighbors, or when you want to change shape and color at the same time.

- Is the stain on the surface or inside the tooth?
- Is it one tooth or the whole smile?
- Are there fillings or crowns in the smile zone that will not whiten?
- Do you want a shade change only, or shape and alignment changes too?
A practical way to decide
